JAPAN 26 SAINTS MARTYRDOM SITE

Monument to the 26 saints of Japan "Prayer of Ascension to Heaven". 26 saints are the 26 Christian martyrs who were crucified in Nagasaki in 1597, following the order of Hideyoshi Toyotomi who issued the Christian ban. The 26 were listed as saints in 1862 by Pope Pius IX.

26 MARTYRS MUSEUM

Japan 26 Martyrs Museum stands on the Nishisaka Hill in the center of Nagasaki City, where the 26 Saints were once crucified. The museum was founded in 1962 by the Jesuits to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the canonization, and tells the story of the Christian culture preached by Francisco Xavier and the messages of those who were martyred by persecution against Christianity.
