NAGASAKI

OURA CATHEDRAL

 

 

【WORLD HERTAGE SITE】Oura Cathdral Church stands on a hill after climbing up a slope from the Oura Cathedral stop of a tram, which is about 20 minutes on the tram from Nagasaki Station. Oura Cathedral was built in 1864 as a church for foreigners. After the dedication ceremony in the next year, Urakami Hidden Christians confessed their religion to Father Petitjan, setting the stage for a miracle in the history of world religion, "Discovery of Hidden Christians". Old Latin Theological Seminary, Old Missionary School, and Old Nagasaki Archbishop's Museum are also the World Heritage properties. The Christian Museum, which displays Christian-related materials beside the cathedral, is also worth a look. In the middle of the hill, there is also the Father's House of St. Kolbe, who became a martyr in Auschwitz after a mission in Japan.

URAKAMI CATHEDRAL

Urakami Cathedral is located near the hypocenter of the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb, and there is Peace Memorial Park on the side. It takes 8 minutes on foot from the Peace Memorial Park stop of the tram. It was dedicated in 1914 as the largest brick Romanesque cathedral in the East. The building was destroyed by the atomic bomb, but was later rebuilt. A-bomb survivors (melted statues of the Virgin, etc.) excavated and collected during the reconstruction are also on display.

SHITSU CHURCH

【WORLD HERTAGE SITE】Shitsu Church is less than an hour by Saikai Kotsu Bus from Nagasaki Station, and is a 7-minute walk from the Shitsu Bunkamura bus stop. Father De Lo who came to Japan from France as a missionary built the Shitsu Church in 1893, and the next year the Old Shitsu Rescue Center, and instructed the residents to improve their lives through the production of bread and macaroni. Nearby there is the Father de Roo Memorial Museum, where you can see related materials on display. The low roof of the church is said to be conscious of strong winds from the sea. Even if it rains lightly in Nagasaki city, it is often the case that this coastal area along the Sotome district is stormy.

OHNO CHURCH

【WORLD HERTAGE SITE】Ohno Church is about an hour by bus from Nagasaki Station, and a 10-minute walk from Ohno Bus Stop, which is further from Shitsu Church. It is located on a hill where you can see the Sumou Nada and the East China Sea in the Sotome area of Nagasaki prefecture. It is said that the area is affiliated with the Christian Koteda clan, who fled to Nagasaki in 1599 due to the repression of Matsuura, the ruler of Hirado. The Ohno Church was built in 1893 by Father De Ro, who invested his own money in 1893 for 26 household members. The “De Ro Wall” using local basalt has a unique texture and looks like a private house. It is a rustic and unique church architecture that incorporates Western techniques while still being based on traditional private house architecture techniques.

OKINOSHIMA CHURCH

Okinoshima Church (Magome Church) facing the beach of Iojima Island, which is about 20 minutes by ferry off Nagasaki Port. At dusk, the Gothic-style cathedral shines in the purple-colored waves and sky.

KUROSAKI CHURCH

Kurosaki Church is built on a hill along the coast of the Nishisonogi Peninsula, in Sotome district of Nagasaki City. It takes 2 min on foot from Kurosaki Church Mae Bus Stop which is about an hour by Saikaikotsu Bus from Nagasaki Station.The church was dedicated in 1920 under the guidance of Father De Ro. The Kurosaki area is the setting for the novel "Silence", and there is Shusaku Endo Literature Museum nearby.
